“The best way to own some thing is to remember it vividly”
Henry Murger <La Vie De Boheme>
My father was a highway engineer when he was younger. He used to work as the leader of the measuring team and participated in the construction of County Way 165, West Coast Expressway, and Badu Interchange. Though I don’t really know the exact locations but I did remember the tiny bumpy paths that made me sleepy, and various smells from the ocean or waterside.
Due to my father’s job changing and life choices, our family moved accordingly for many times, from the 3-story house with terrazzo stairs in Chiayi to a little hill house in Dadu, Taichung, and then a shared apartment in Taipei with our relatives. My brothers and I grew as the city developed.
As the gaining of independence, “home” is becoming like a spot, like a more brief belonging place. In the process of movements centered at home, like spiders knitting the webs, the moving lines could be regular or irregular, but all these lines leading each other marking the unique routes in the giant blank paper of life time. And those what make individuals as individuals now are the sum of the space complicate factors and the events in the passing time. They are the looks accumulated from everyday routes and the events generated from them. During the circling, we unavoidably tangle with the current world, and we might be a meaningless dust in the flood of history but still the world is feeding us with various events and surroundings. Accumulated in the moving process, we finally make our individual myth. The myth could reflect the current world. As a female individual growing up in the 80’ Taipei, I try to seek ways and medias to record everything then.
Those moves that pull us grow, smells of concrete and rebar and tar that was just applied, and the new house adventures of child memory all make “roads” mean different to me.
In 2015, gogoro, a Taiwan local electric scooter brand, was launched in Taipei. I become the first riders in the Beta Program (Polit 089). During this period of time, the main mode of movement has shifted from public transportation to independent action and the need to exchange electricity in public, which also prompted me to re-experience the familiar daily paths during walking with a different perspective and angle. At the same time, in order to record the process in more detail, I began to use GPS to record various movement paths. These have also become the context and material of the initial creation.
